Audrey Lorde, writing the prodigious poem, “Who Said It Was Simple,” obtained a self- description of a black lesbian mother, as well as a warrior and poet. Her career spiked when she sparked an elevated interest in confronting racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia in her writings. Through finding herself in her different occupations, she says, “I have a duty. To speak truth as I see it and to share not just my triumphs, not just things that felt good, but the pain, the intense, often unmitigating pain.” She struggled to find equality in a semi-diverse culture. Through her journey of heartache and tribulation, her voice grew to be one who addressed social and racial injustice, as well as sexuality in the former world.
